Hi! My husband and I are going to be fostering and adopting children age 1-8. Since we don't have any bio children, I need advice on what "fun" things to already have in the house when the children arrive.
What were your child's favorite things when they were at certain ages? I need specific names of action figures, most-loved characters in books, favorite meal for dinnertime, etc! Tell me how old your child was when they loved that particular thing, and let me know if the child was a boy or a girl. Thanks!

I have boys. My oldest son (11) has loved Lego's for years. Lately his favorites have been the Bionicles series of toys by Lego. They are inexpensive, too, which is a plus. My younger son (19 months) loves balls and toy cars. Make sure you have a lot of paper, markers, colored pencils, and crayons. Most kids like to draw at all ages. Go to a used book store and stock up on children's books for all ages. Take a teacher friend with you or ask the salesperson for advice. You can also do a search for book lists for a variety of ages. The Little People toys are great for toddlers and preschoolers. I think they're by Fisher Price. You can find used toys at Good Will, garage sales, and at children's clothing consignment shops. Wee Sing videos are great for a broad range of kids--toddlers through age 7 or so.

i am also a foster parent and i take children under the age of 2. when i first started fostering, i did not have much (i really did not need it). the more kids that have come and gone the more things i have collected. garage sales are the best place to find things. right now i have a 1 & 2 year old and their favorite toy is the little people farm and bus. i like it too cuz they have multi-ethnic people. my son is in love with anything bob the builder or thomas the train. board books are also a must. reading before bed for children of any age is a good bonding/wind down time. good luck and have fun.

Dress up rules!!! By and far our dress up chest has been the most favorite. Even the boys love dressing up! Make sure there are a couple of wigs in there and some large pieces of fabric that can be used as turbans, veils...ect
Play dough is also a favorite. You can make up a batch of salt dough and keep it in the fridge. It will keep for ever. It doesn't stinck like comercial brands do, and it is alot smoother, plus, you can make it in their favorite colors.
