Death of birth parent and inheritance laws?

Hi! I am trying to find out some information to help a friend who's father passed away. He had children from a previous marriage and in 1982 their step-father adopted them. The adoption took place in Arkansas. (the biological father lived in another state). The birth father recently passed away. Are the birth children entitled to an inheritance or did they lose all rights with the adoption? Thanks!
