We adopted our son 4 years ago from the Marshall Islands (he was 7 weeks old). His doctor has been running tests to determine if something is wrong with his kidneys. She has encouraged us to find out if kidney problems are common in the Marshallese. Does anyone know where I can find this information?
Thank you,
Kathy
Dear Kathy,
I do not know the answer to the kidney problem question, but you should post that question on a Yahoo website called RMI Kids, solely for people who have adopted Marshallese children. I am looking to adopt a Marshallese baby and I've been reading that website and they are always exchanging information on their kids and their particular health issues. I bet you could find something out.
Good luck!

I worked in the Marshall Islands for a year as a Registered Nurse in 1996-1997. In fact we have an adopted grand-daughter from there. I do not recall kidney problems being prevalent there.
I am on the board looking for people who have adopted children from there.
Lela
Lela, since you were a nurse there and you have had an actual hands on experience with adoption from Marshall Islands, can you tell me if you have had experience or heard about Southern Adoptions? Who did you use, if you don't mind me asking?
Thanks,
Frinklez
Frinklez,
I have heard of Southern Adoptions but have never used them. You could find out more information from those who have by joining the RMIkids group at RMIkids@yahoo.com.
I did not go through an adoption agency as the child my daughter and son-in-law adopted was a private adoption, not uncommon among people living there. We had an attorney handle the legal work since the child being adopted was already identified.
