My wife and I(south carolina) have tried to conceive for 8 years now, and we have been blessed with an oppurtunity to adopt a child from a friend of the family. When we spoke to a friend(who had previously adopted)she recommended a lawyer who was the cheapest she had found. We spoke to him, he told us it would be 5,500 dollars just for his fees(which we dont feel he has earned) and between 750-1500 for a out of state lawyer(ohio)then there would be 2 home study fees the first would be 800 and the second would be 250(after placement) now its 3 weeks before the birth of our Shelby Marie Hall, and he has 2 possible lawyers(who he hasnt told us about until yesterday)and both would be 2500. According to what I understand there shouldn't be any fee other than the fee for the paper work of the day of the adoption in ohio, we have already paid our lawyer the 5500, and though we could swing the additonal 2500, its alot of money to spend, when we we really dont have it, it would put us in a bind. we feel we are being robbed, and could use some advice from anyone who would offer some. thanks james
I think the fee for the att. is high. Also the one in Ohio should be way cheaper than that. The bp's are in Ohio is that right? They only need to sign their relinq papers and that is it. I would start questioning him. We ran into the same thing here with our att. Guess what they were charging me for - the learning curve! I told them no way back it off and they backed of 1500 but we still paid over $4K (too much in my opinion). I was told it could have been done for cheaper. Your homestudy is in the ballpark - that is about what we paid.
Maybe call around to other att. and find out from them what a "normal" adoption would cost.
Good luck
