Our family is hoping to adopt a 4 year old girl in need of surgery to repair a cleft palate. We have just started filling out the INS forms. My concern is this. My husband is self employed and due to his running his own business our taxes appear that we live on a very low budget. In truth, we are not rich, but comfortable. We own our home plus two rental properties, have a good savings and take two family vacations per year. I used to be the executive director for United Way, but now I'm a stay at home mom raising our four children ages 18, 17, 14, and 11. (three boys and the youngest a girl) We are a very close, loving, happy blended family. My husband (41) and I (38) have been married 5 years. We both have been divorced once.
Oh, also we have been a host family for a foreign exchange student, Jose' from Argentina for a year.
Given the aforementioned information, do you foresee any significant obstacle to us moving forward with international adoption? I so don't want to cause heartache to our children whom also wish to welcome this child to our family. All suggestions and information is most appreciated. Thank you so much for your time and attention.

Dear Diane,
Hello..it is Karen from PA again. I got your message privately and then found this question also on the message board. My husband is also Self Employed and we also live comfortably on his income. I do not work outside the home. The INS goes by Gross income not net...All you have to show is that you meet the income guidelines as listed on the form I-864. As with us..you will be a family of 7 after adoption...the income guideline in $34,175 gross income per year. Make sure you draw attention to the fact that your husband is self employed and that he is taxed on nis NET income after deductions not his gross income. If you do not meet the income guidelines...you are able to have a co-signer. Karen (also in PA)
