Is it true and legal that once you finalize your adoption and obtain a birth certificate you can have certain information modified? Is this legal in all states? I can't believe this, for this is so sad for adoptees trying to find their birthparents! Maybe there should be an "adoption certificate" which lists the parents, (adoptive parents) and the birthmother and birthfather (if known), and definitely not alter the location, DOB, or time of birth, etc. Gosh, I just can't believe this!
It depends on the state, but for arizona, you can change the name of the baby and the parents name, but not location or time of birth. The Real bithcertificate is put in a "sealed file" which can be retrieved if needed or opened by court order. So it's not as though there is no way to prove who and when someone was really born.

We've had this happen on one bc of and older child adoption. However, the caseworker deliberately gave us a copy of the child's original birth certificate with the biological parents on it. We have saved it for him.
I was also surprised to find that all the information was changed, save for the location and time. I thought that it was odd to imply that I gave birth in a state that I have never even visited!
I'm not in favor of placing the birthparents names along with ours on a certificate; but certainly, I think it a good idea to have the original one stored in a place if the child ever decides to search, etc.
Sincerely,
Linny
