Hi
We are in the process of finding an agency. There are 2 that we are considering at this time. Does anyone know anything about Adoption Associates Inc in Farmington Hills or Family Adoption Center which I believe is in Utica or Sterling Heights?
Also, if you know of any other good agencies in the greater Detroit area, I'd like to hear about them. Or if you know of really bad agencies to avoid, that would be good to know too.
We want an agency that is very thorough and meticulous about following adoption laws and that provides counseling for birthparents before and after the adoption. We are 33 and 35 years old, have been married 1 1/2 years (dated for about 6 yrs before that). We are not officially infertile though it is entirely possible because we both have other health issues that often result in infertility. But there are other health issues that would make a pregnancy potentially dangerous for both me and baby. We want a domestic adoption of an infant.
Thanks for your help!

I don't know about the agencies you mentioned, and we are probably quite a bit south of you , but my husband and I are working with Family Counseling and Children's Services of Lenawee County. They are located in Adrian, again probably too far from you. But I HIGHLY recommend them. They have been excellent so far. They have many programs and deal with all types of adoption. All of our dealings to this point have been excellent.
We are nearly in the same situation as you and your husband. We are 31 and 34 and haven't officially been diagnosed as infertile, but both have medical reasons that may result in infertility. The main difference in our situation is that we are looking to adopt an older child, 4-7 years old, and so are getting a foster care license too. To this point we have done all of our training, medical clearences, background check, etc. The only thing left is the home inspection for our foster license and for the finishing touches on our homestudy.
If you are interested in a contact from FCCS, just let me know. I have the greatest person for you to talk to about infant adoptions.

My husband and I used Adoption Associates - Lansing Office.
The staff were excellent - they located counseling and arranged the visits for the BM.
They were knowledgable of the laws - I would recommend them.
Let me know if you have any other questions - I would be happy to try and answer them for you.
My husband and I are currently trying to adopt through CSM(Catholic Services of macomb), they are located in Clinton Twp.
They have their good points and their bad points.:(
If interested you can e-mail me and I can give you more info.
We had a failed adoption last spring and were looking at switching agencies. We looked into Adoption Assoc., but didn't like the fact that they charge one price if you want to adopt a caucasian baby, one price if you want to adopt an Africian/american, and one price if you want to adopt a bi-racial baby:confused:
There are good and bad points to all agencies. My advice to you would be to pick one that you are comfortable with. My wife and I went through Family Adoption Consultants. We went through the Kalamazoo office since that is where we lived at the time. Their main office is in Rochester. they have a Website if you would like to view it www.facadopt.org/ . They provide everything to adopt foreign and domestic, in-state and out of state, foster child placement, counseling of birthmothers, support groups. They even have a picnic each summer, last years picnic was in Farmington. We now live in Highland and are local to the area. Good Luck on the search.
We have been waiting (and waiting and waiting) using FAC (through the Utica office, located on Hall Road near M-53). We were placed in their book in October of 2001. We had one interview after which we weren't chosen. We had an appointment where the BM changed her mind about placement before we arrived. That is all. We know two other couples working with FAC. One was in the books two weeks less than us hoping for a second child. They haven't heard ANYTHING. The other has been in the books since June 2002 and also hasn't heard anything. I can't say if it is the agency or if this is how the wait is everywhere. I can say that we are extremely disappointed by the process.
I hope this isn't upsetting for you, I just want you to know our honest experience.
Best of luck!
Dawn
