Hello all,
I am always trying to find ways to hook adoptive parents from the RMI up with each other both for the sake of the adoptive families and for the children now in their homes. The RMI is such a unique place to adopt from in as much as it is an Open Adoption and there is opportunity to grow with your birth family and your new child at the same time.
We have two little girls who are biological sisters. We have worked very hard at keeping our relationship with their birth family open. I also send aid over to the RMI every single month in an effort to help families and children that are still there. Currently, I send over general aid packages to a wonderful woman who passes the items out to families in need. I also have a more specific outreach with the clinic on Ebeye where I send over only baby items. I am always looking for donations for either program and have been blessed to see how military families here in Europe have been willing to help as well as how many families with children from the RMI are doing something similar. We just feel that these little girls have touched our lives so much that we want to give back in some small way. This seems to be the least we can do.
On that note, there is another RMI-kids list on Yahoo that has over 200 families that have been touched by adoption from the RMI on it. If you go to http://groups.yahoo.com/ and then put in RMI-kids in the search box, it will bring it up. I have been on the list for almost five years and I know it has been a wonderful support for me and my family. It is also a great resource for those looking into or already having adopted from the RMI as it does reach a much wider audience.
There is also a reunion, (or more then one!) coming up for families with children from the RMI. This is a wonderful way to meet other parents with children from the RMI and hook up with a support system for your child to teach her more about her culture. The one in Chicago is being held in July and I know they are expecting many families to attend. We will still be in Germany so it isn't possible for us to make it but I sure wish it was!!!!!
I hope to see many more new families join and hope we will continue to grow together both as adoptive families and as a group.
Maryann
