My DH and I brought home our son from Guatemala in July, 2001.
We knew that we needed to readopt him in Mass and waited for our final post placement report. My husband became very sick last April and died on April 25th. The final report arrived the week he was sick (4months after our last post placement) visitl. My sw said to call her when I was ready to proceed. I have called twice and emailed her but have yet to hear from her. I would like to proceed with Matt's readoption so he can become a citizen, Do you have any advice on how I should proceed? I am thinking of hiring an adoption attorney to help me through this process.
Thanks
Maureen
I'm not a legal expert, but had a situation kind of like yours, only not so sad. You do probably need an attorney. My son was adopted from Romania by a single women who did not readopt in the US. After a 18 months of searching for a new family, he came to live with us and we adopted him in the US. The paperwork was a mess. Since you were the original adoptive mom, this should go smoother for you. After the readoption, you will still need to establish citizenship before social security and INS will list hem as a citizen.(Social security will not take adoption papers.) I've been told that applying for a passport will do this, but I haven't done it yet.

Thanks for the info. I am a little confused about the social security issue. Matt has a social security card and has been receiving the benefits he is entitled to since Jim died. the adoption was finalized in Guatemala so they accepted it aslegal.

My son also has a social security care but it lists his status as resident alien rather then us citizen. His US adoption certificate was not enough to change his status.
