My sister left her child with my mother when the child was 6 months old. My mom has guardianship of my neice who is now 9 years old. My neice, Asia, has always called my mom, mom and has always called me her sister.
We recently told my neice the "abridged" version of how she came to live with my mother and one of her questions was 'Can mama adopt me?'
So we are trying to find out the answer to that question.
My mom has been divorced for over 20 years and is raising Asia all alone. She gets no help what so ever for the child. No child support from the birth mother or father. We really don't even know where either parent is at this time. My mom has a job but it takes all she makes to pay bills and take care of my neice.
We were told that there were forms to be found online to start the legal process of adoption. Supposedly someone my mom knows did an adoption without attorneys. My mother really can not afford attorneys fees and such. However, we want everthing to be legal and able to stand up in court if the need ever arises.
Can anyone give me more information? PLEASE
