i will make this as short as i can. this is in n.c. i want to know how a mother can give up her child to a family member for adoption and signs all rights away and signs consent for adoption at the age of 15. and then the family member files for afdc and then the mother has to pay child support for that child because the adoptive parents have not made the adoption final even after 12 years. there may be a jail sentence again for being behind in support for this child. please tell me how this happens and why it is legal, when youve done your part and cant afford to pay support for a child that is suppose to already be adopted but is not final. thank you for any help.
It sounds to me like they have legal guardianship and not an adoption. You need to contact Legal Aid in your area as soon as possible. They can tell you the statis of this child. If you are the birthparent it is likely you never relinquished your parental rights.

thank you for your reply... parental rights were signed away 12 yrs ago and was the adoption papers they had a lawyer that we went to and went to court, and legal aide wont help they turned it down. june 26 will result in jail time for the rear child support and no one will help with this in my area. they say since they adoption was not finalized i have to pay support due to them having the AFDC . the family member just finished paying their lawyer a few months ago for this adoption. again after 12 yrs. and still recieving AFDC for the child. now they say it cant be finished until a home study is done. this is a blood to blood adoption . i know i may not make much since trying to get it all out at the same time and im sorry for that but i need all the help i can get. thank you so much for your help.
