Only children who could not be placed in a foster home or adoptive home in Ghana are eligible for intercountry adoption. Prospective adoptive parents must reside in Ghana for at least three months before the adoption and must be at least 25 years old and 21 years older than the adopted child. Ghana does not allow adoption by same-sex couples. In 2011, 99 children were adopted from Ghana.
