As the calendar flips to a new year, it’s a natural time for reflection, renewal, and setting intentions for the future. For a birth parent, this period can hold special significance. The end of the year provides a chance to look back on your adoption journey, honor your experiences, and embrace the opportunities for healing and growth that lie ahead. Here’s how you can make the most of this New Year.

1. Acknowledge Your Feelings

Think about all the emotions you’ve felt during your adoption journey—hope, excitement, sadness, and happiness. As you look back on the past year, take some time to reflect on these feelings. Writing in a journal can help you explore what you’re feeling as a birth parent. Don’t hold back—talk about both the tough times and the good moments.

If writing isn’t your style, you can use a voice memo app on your phone to talk about your feelings. It’s a fast way to record your thoughts. Another option is art—drawing, painting, or crafting can also help you express your emotions in a therapeutic way.

2. Celebrate Your Strengths

You’ve shown a lot of strength and bravery throughout your adoption journey. Take a moment to recognize and celebrate that. Think about how far you’ve come and the courage it took to make the best choices for your child. Acknowledging your strengths can help you find pride in your journey and kindness for yourself in the harder moments.

3. Connect with Your Support Network

You don’t have to go through this alone. It can be really helpful to connect with others who understand what you’re going through. Reach out to friends, family, or support groups for birth parents. Talking about your experience and listening to others can bring comfort and new insights.

The Gladney Center for Adoption offers counseling services to birth parents. Consider how counseling can help you with your mental health.

4. Set Personal Goals for Healing

Think about setting goals that help you heal and take care of yourself as a birth parent. This could mean practicing mindfulness, going to therapy, or doing something creative like art or writing. These activities can help you acknowledge your emotions and move forward. Setting goals can also give you a sense of purpose and direction.

Make self-care a priority by focusing on your mental and physical health. Consider mindfulness practices, therapy, or activities that bring you joy and relaxation. Build a support network by connecting with understanding friends, family, or other birth parents through groups or online communities. If your adoption is open or semi-open, aim to stay in touch with your child’s adoptive family through updates, letters, or photos. Lastly, embrace new opportunities, such as picking up a new hobby, returning to school, or starting a new career, to boost your confidence and sense of purpose.

5. Establish Healthy Boundaries

Creating healthy boundaries is important for taking care of yourself. If you’re in touch with your child’s adoptive family or dealing with adoption-related matters, think about what boundaries will help you feel better. Let others know what you need and what boundaries you have to keep for yourself.

6. Practice Self-Compassion

Be kind to yourself as you deal with your feelings and experiences. Treat yourself the way you would treat a good friend. Remember that it’s okay to have mixed emotions and that your journey is unique. Being kind to yourself can help you stay strong and positive.

Self-affirmations are positive statements that help you build confidence and reinforce a positive mindset. They involve repeating encouraging phrases about yourself, like “I am strong” or “I can handle challenges.” To practice self-affirmations, choose a few affirmations that resonate with you, repeat them daily—ideally in front of a mirror or during quiet moments—and truly believe in their meaning. This simple practice can boost your self-esteem and help you stay focused on your strengths and goals.

7. Reflect on Your Aspirations

Think about what you want to achieve or experience in the coming year. Whether it’s personal growth, trying new things, or strengthening your support network, setting clear goals can keep you motivated. Write down what you hope to achieve and think about steps you can take to reach those goals.

8. Explore New Connections

Meeting new people can be a great way to support your growth and enrich your life. Consider joining new support groups, attending workshops, or taking part in community events related to adoption or personal development. These new connections can offer extra support and help you continue to grow.

Looking for a more neutral space to make friends? Making new friends in the community can be simple. Try joining local clubs or attending community events that interest you. Volunteering for causes you care about is another way to meet people. Starting conversations with neighbors or joining online groups for your area can also help you connect with others. Just being open and approachable can lead to new friendships.

9. Embrace New Traditions

The New Year is a perfect time to start new traditions that bring you joy and honor your journey. This might be something simple, like setting aside time for self-care each month or creating a special ritual to celebrate your journey when you do experience memorable milestones.

10. Moving Forward with Hope and Resilience

As you reflect on the past and plan for the future, remember that you have shown a lot of strength and resilience as a birth parent. The New Year is a chance to honor your experiences, care for yourself, and look forward to new opportunities for growth and healing.

By recognizing your feelings, celebrating what you’ve done well, and setting new goals, you can start the New Year feeling hopeful and prepared for the next chapter of life. Remember, you’re not alone—there are people and resources ready to help you.

As you go through the year, keep building on what you’ve achieved and be open to new opportunities. Your journey as a birth parent shows your bravery and love, and the New Year is a great time to look at your story with a positive attitude.

Here’s to a year full of healing, growth, and new hope.
