Hi everyone I have a question about trying to adopt when one spouse is in Korea and the other is in the states...See my dh is in Korea until next July 2004 and we are so anxious to get started that we were wondering what we could do to get the process rolling while hes out of the states...He will be home in January for his 30 days. Does anyone who maybe has had this situation while trying to adopt or if you know someone that has had this situation could give us any tips and advise on how to get things going..We're ready to be parents...thanks for all who reply

Boy, I think I could write a book on how to keep moving forward with adoption while your spouse is deployed...My husband has been in Kuwait/Iraq since last December and won't be home until this December (short tour). So....we chose a country that would allow me to complete an adoption by myself....Bulgaria. Well, Bulgaria fell through for us, and so we went to the only other country that allowed one spouse to complete an adoption- Guatemala. If you've done some research, you'll know that Guatemala is in a state of turmoil right now. Because this took so long, my husband will now be home in time to go through the legal process in the country of our choice, so our options opened up. We happily chose Panama and feel it was where we were meant to be the whole time. My husband is actually home this week on leave, so we just were re-fingerprinted and had our homestudy updated. For our Bulgaria dossier, I put the entire thing together all by myself and jumped through hoops to get his signature on forms, letter from employer, his medical etc. But- it is possible!!!! If you have any specific questions, let me know. I'd be happy to share the hurdles I came across, the countries that we researched etc..

Thank You Kirsten for sharing this information with me about adopting when spouse is deployed..Dh and I really were thinking about Haiti..we have a close friend whos Haitian and we feel a strong connection with Haiti, however I will consider Guatemala also...thanks again this info is very resourceful
P.S do you by any chance know what requirements Haiti has?
I would be really careful about Guatemala right now!!! It's in a major upheaval period, and the future of adoptions there is unsure. That's why we went with Panama. I'd suggest you go to the State Dept. website. There is a page for each country and adoption conditions. It would give you a good idea on Haiti. You can also go to www.prescious.org and see quite a few pictures of haitian kids waiting to be adopted. I'd be really careful about choosing a child, then picking an agency because of that particular child's picture though. I'd research agencies REALLY carefully.....but these pictures will give you an idea of the children in Haiti.
