I thought that too! But when I called our insurance they only covered after the child was born and the paperwork had to say that the child was going to be placed with us.
What you want to do is call your insurance and see what they state.

No. I've never heard of any insurance that would cover birth expenses for a person not listed on the insurance policy. The expenses of the birth are charged to the mother, not the baby. So even after the adoption you can't assume those expenses into your insurance. The only things covered are the baby's expenses - like baby's surgery after the birth, or baby's extended hospital stay due to illness, or something like that.
If you happen to find a carrier that will allow your health insurance to pick up the cost of someone else's birth expenses, make sure you post it, because it would be truly unique!
the bmom should get on the oregon health plan - that is what ours was on and it worked great. Then our insurance took over once the baby was born - it covered him, but not her and the birth.
