We have recently decided to adopt internationally. We had decided on the Republic of Georgia as our country. We were informed today that the Georgia program has been put on hold. The program will be down for at least 3 months. Has anyone else been told that they need to chose another country and forgo Georgia?
Hi We are not trying to go to Georgia but I did ask about it and was told about the troubles they were having It is asomething to do with the gov because before adoptions were kinda handled like adoptions here and the babies were in foster care. Anyway, they are trying to pucsh through legisaltion and they are waiting for the pres to sign or not sign, there are people who are now postponed from traveling to get their children. Look at www.ethica.org I believe is the name and it keeps up with what is going on, or contact an agency like CAS who does adoptions there!! GOOD LUCK!!!!

Adoptions are still going on in Georgia--several families from a major agency just returned. Yes there are issues arising, but what happened is that Parliament passed legislation without the knowledge of the Ministry of Education--so that made the legislation illegal. So, it now needs to go through the proper and legal channels and it is not known how long that will take. What the gov't wanted to do was to make it similar to Russia where the children have to remian on a registry until 6months of age before they can be adopted out--this gives georgian citizens a chance to adopt first. But if this ends up being the case, the draw of the younger babies from georgia would be eliminated. But for now, adoptions are still proceeding. If you have not started your process yet--you can ride out the storm and see what happens or you can switch to another country if it make you nervous. Some agencies will let you be in both programs, but that means you woul have to do two separate dossiers (time and money) but I know two couples that were already in the process with Georgia and now have a dossier complete with their agency for Russia--so kind of whatever happens first thing.
Hoped this helped--I know how upsetting and frustrating it is for families who are waiting for a referral or for those that have received a referral, but for now they are being processed albeit at a slower pace.
Best wishes,
Kris
I was recently told by an agency that their Georgia adoptions were on hold even the ones who had already gotten referrals but hopefully they are allowing those to go through. That breaks my heart. This is where she told me to keep up with legal issues surrounding adoption.http://www.usembassy.ge/releases/Sept26_03.htm and if that does not work it is www.ethicanet.org
