Hi Nancy:
My dear daughter has a concrete random learning style. Which generally means, according to the books and knowing her since she was born, that she is quick, intuitive, curious, realistic, creative, innovative, instinctive, independent, likes to choose and adventurous. She does not like forced schedules. We have been in contact with lots of different parents that have children that have gone on to College. Many tell us of the lack of English skills that students can have coming out of High School.
My question is knowing the above about our dear daughter's learning style what do you think would be a good way to help her be more prepared for College English?
Thanks so very much. Appreicate your insights.
Warm regards,
Hi Sabra,
Kids with concrete random learning styles need a compelling reason to do things ... and as you mention, they like to choose. So I would recommend letting your lovely daughter know the vital importance of language skills in school and college. After all it is through language skills and reading that testing takes place. And English will be a required course in college.
Then I'd suggest a shopping trip to a book store at which she can choose books to read (on topics that she is really interested in) so she will have them available and can read them when she decides she wants to. Reading is a great way to spend time and also teaches us how to use language.
I'd love to hear some ideas from other parents too!
Thanks for the thoughtful question, Sabra!

Thanks very much Nancy.
Very much appreicate those ideas. Right now we are working with her on additional descriptive words in her character presentation in her papers for her American Lit classs. Because they are her descriptive words it helps her to feel creative and independent.
She is starting to put more into it which is awesome.
Have other parents gone through finding out that there High School or College student in not as prepared as they should have been in the area of English during High School or College?
What did you do? Did your student take supplemental English classes in College? Did your student tell you that they wished they were more prepared for writing term papers in College?
Other Parents what did you and/or your student experience?
Thanks everyone that takes a minute to post. Really appreciate.
