Hi,
My name is Debbie and my husband and I are in the final stages of the adoption process. Kind of wait and see mode. We are open to older child/ siblings with special needs. We are both in our early 40's. Suffering from two miscarriages and failed invitro, then a hysterectomy in march 2003. We have always wanted children and have some knowledge of the adoption process and outcome as my husband has an adoptive sister and I have an adopted cousin. Anyway, we are overwhelmed as well as excited about this. I am an avid member and user of amazon.com, they seem to have many resources and books available.
I am currently reading "Raising Adopted Children" by Lois Ruskai Melina this book covers every senerio and behavorial and medical issues, along with atachment, bonding, loss, adhd, psychological issues, bonding, the list goes on, I find it an easy reading book and has answered many of my questions about the challenges of adoption and issues that may arise.
Also I hav "Our Own" Adopting and parenting the older child by Trish Maskew. This book covers many issues chapters include
settling in, grief and change, behavior and discipline, birthfamilies and culture, the core issues(loss, rejection, shame, grief, identity, intimacy control and is professional help needed. Language and school, An "Alphabet soup of diagnosis(covers several) Medical references. I haven't gotten the book yet but my social adoption worker suggested "The Hurt Child" this can be found at amazon.com. If anyone out there can offer me advise it would greatly be apprieciated. How have your families reacted to the adoptions, my in- laws are very happy and open and others seem scared to talk to me about it. We hope for a success story soon, waiting is so anxiety taxing. Sorry this is so long, first time here.
GOD BLESS YOU ALL

A good book that I would recommend as an adoptee is.....20 things that adopted kids wish their adoptive parents knew... by Sherrie Eldridge....it gives great insight into some of the feelings that an adoptee may have. It was available through our public library.....you could check your local one...sal
