Hi! My husband and I adopted our daughter through a private agency in OK 10 months ago. We have been so blessed by adoption and are eager to add more children to our family. We are interested in the foster to adopt program, but because we adopted previously through a private agency we are clueless to how this process works. We are homestudy approved and I am a stay at home mom. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Annie
Be sure to get signed up with Midwest Foster Care and adoption Association(MFCAA). The offer lots of training opportunities, understand how DFS works and assists parents in their dealing and understanding of all parts of the process. It's a great group.

The adoptions go through Jackson County DFS, but this group is tied in heavily with them and they are a big advocate for parents.
Their monthly support meetings go to training and they really get good speakers and anytime I've needed them, they've been there with valuable information and answers. Anyone adopting in this aea needs to be tied in with this group. The parents also get to know each other and can offer support and assistance. It just helps so much to be connected to other parents who understand what it's like throught he whole process.
I adopted some Mo kids through Jackson County but was tied in with another agency.
I think I understand now. Thanks for explaining!! I will for sure get in contact with that group; it sounds wonderful. We have a few other friends that are ready to get started too, so I will forward the information to them as well.
Thanks Again!

You can talk to the Children's Division in Jackson County by calling (816) 889-2595. I'm sure they would be happy to talk with you and answer your questions...

I actually just received an e-mail from that department. I gave her all the info she needed on myself and my husband and she said she would be mailing me the application packet (?) Is this similar to the applications provided in private adoptions?
They give you a fat packet to fill out and then find you a class. The homestudy is done after that.
My guess is that it would be fairly similar but it might vary from the agency you used in Oklahoma. While each agency might have a slightly different approach they will probably want a lot of the same information. Good luck!
Thank you for your valuable information! Luckily, our homestudy is still current so we don't have to worry about that aspect of it. Oh the joys of huge packets and tons of paperwork...it just wouldn't be the same without it!
Thanks Again!

Probably the biggest difference you will find is that what you learn in class will be discussed with your licensing worker (the person who does your homestudy). I am a foster/adopt parent in jackson county and have been for two years. We are hoping to complete our first adoption in March.
One thing I would recommend is start building your support group. When you go to class get to know the other people. We still talk to several people from our class two years later. We share a lot of information with each other such as what the Commissioner are like, what the staff is like at this office or that office, what is going on with each others case. It really does help.
Good luck.
