We are lic foster parents and will be lic to adopt at the end of January. I have heard that it is very difficult to adopt from another state.
Has anyone had experience with this?
If we were to adopt from another state, would we still be reimbursed by MO for adoption fees, and still receive subsidies?
We are both from Kansas, and live only 2 miles from the KS state line. The only reason I would want to adopt from KS, is that there are more children that would fit the characteristics we need for our family.
Hi Shirl -
I live in KS and have little info on the process over here.
My dh and I are going through Mapp classes for 10 weeks - which is required by the state. Then they will set up a home study for us - no cost - and once we get the thumbs up - they will start matching us with potential kids.
Our class leaders told us Missouri does not have the Mapp program that KS offers. I think they have one similar though. Perhaps it would qualify as the training?
I have heard that there is a LOT of red tape to adopt from another state. I know there are over 850 children that are available in KS right now. If you go to the "Coming Home Kansas" website, you can see the photolistings, but only about 100 kids are on the site.
I saw on the website there is an office in KC, MO. Perhaps this was created to "ease" the adoption process for families in KC metro area. Go to www.cominghomekansas.org If you click on the "contact us" folder, you will see the Missouri phone number.
Hopefully this is helpful.

Thanks for your response!
MO has 2 different trainings one for fostering and one for adoption. The fostering classes are called STARS and the adoption class is called SPAULDING. We are only one class from being done with SPAULD.
I'm starting to realize that the photolistings are just a tip of the iceburg. So, I need to just quit trying to push it so fast and wait until our SPAULD is over and our names will be better circulated.
Thanks again, ;)
We adopted from North Dakota, however we lived there when teh child was placed with us. There is a LOT of red tape when you go out of state, it is called interstate compact and it takes longer to finalize adoptions because you are dealing with two states worth of red tape. It can be done but be ready for teh finalization to take a while, and MO picked up the legal fees, however the subsidy comes from North Dakota.
