Does anyone know how this is possible? My boss has about 120,000 miles on his Amex that we can transfer to an airlines but Delta says that you can't donate. Maybe I am using the wrong wording....

I would suggest talking directly to AMEX. I have a friend who donated his frequent flyer miles (with AMEX) to another friend who was flying to Romania to adopt a child. The only issue he had was the amount of time that AMEX needed to transfer the miles. He persisted (got a little hot at times) and insisted on speaking to a supervisor. He explained the situation, that this was an IA and that she HAD to travel quickly and they could not wait through the "normal" process. He got the miles transferred to her and tickets issued.
This was probably 5 or 6 years ago so things may have changed but I would definately talk to AMEX. They are offering a service to cardholders. The airline is looking at lost revenue by letting the miles transfer. Who is going to be more cooperative?????
Have your boss put the pressure on AMEX, ask to talk to a higher up. Have him mention how much he puts on their card every year (my friend did and threatened to switch). Of course, the amount of pressure that can be applied depends on your relationship with your boss. If you are not really close and he is just trying to do something nice he may be hesitant about rocking the boat. If you are friend he may be willing to fight it for you.
Good luck and let me know how it goes.
