Does anyone out there have experience with or know of a Jewish families who have adopted from Ethiopia who would be willing to share their experiences with me? I hope to adopt a child between 18 months and three years of age.
I am currently completing my home study and for a number of reasons -- including historic and cultural ties to Judaism -- am seriously considering Ethiopia, but would like to have some contact with any Jews who have already adopted from there. I am interested in knowing about the process and adjustment issues specific to Ethiopian children. I live in a city with a large Jewish population, but am concerned about how an African child would be accepted by the community.
I have seen an organization with the above name on the web. I think they are in NYC. Lots of local activities, but it seems they provide some wider spread support too. We have domestically adopted an AA girl, she is still young, so we are just learning about the challenges that await, but no problems so far. I don't know anyone who adopted from African, good luck as you gather info.;)
