I am searching for my mother's half sister. She was born Susan Jeanine Chappell, January 26, 1949 at Sibley Hospital in Washington, D.C. This information, according to one of my other aunt's that has it, is not an official birth certificate but more of a ceremonial type paper.
It was told by my grandmother, Margaret Chappell, that Susan was privately adopted. We're not sure of how legal it was at the time. The only paper she claimed to have signed was one agreeing not to try and take her back. Also, the only other agreement made, not sure if kept of course, was that her first name be kept Susan. This mainly because of there being a son, Richard, born before her. It can be a small world.
The couple in Maryland that Margaret gave her to were friends of a Mrs. Park(s) from Tennessee who could not have children. We assume that this is where Susan may have wound up. At this time, Margaret and William (Bill), were living in Hyattsville.
I am attaching a photograph of Susan and who we believe to be Mrs. Park(s).
Susan, if you're out there, you have 4 sisters and a brother who would love to meet you one day.
Sincerely,
Your niece
My name is Diane Hinkle. I am searching for my Mother's birth family. She was adopted privately in 1948 and it also took place at Sibley. Like in your case we are not sure how legal it was at the time or if there are records of this adoption. We may be starting the process of petitioning the court to unseal the record, if there is one.
I guess I was just wondering how your search was going and if you could offer me any advice how to proceed with mine.
If you would like you can contact me at diane.hinkle@gd-ais.com.
Thanks,
Diane
