We are hoping to be travelling soon to bring our 5 year old son home and are starting to check on airfares. For those of you that brought older children home did you buy the ticket through a travel agent or through the airline directly? Is there anyway you can buy a roundtrip and just use the first leg as tonight my brother suggested that to me as the one ways look to be more expensive. Thanks!

It's against all the airlines' policies to allow you to buy a round-trip ticket and only use it one way. I think it's annoying that they make you pay more for 1-way, but just don't let them catch on that you're planning it. They will refuse to sell you the ticket--I've had it happen! So, not sure if you can simultaneously ask about adoption rates and round-trip vs. one-way fairs. They might wonder why you're adopting and sending the child back to Guate on her own. ;)
I'm also slightly concerned about not using half a ticket in today's airport security tactics. All I need is someone knocking on my door wondering why I didn't show up for a flight. :)

We just returned on 3/27 with our 3 year old son. I was told before we left - by a travel agent who deals with adoption flights - to purchase the tkt in GC because the name on the tkt has to match the name on the passport exactly. When DH went to buy the tkt, the Continental tkt agent SUGGESTED a roundtrip fare as is was a good bit cheaper than the one way fare, and that is how we brought our son home! It is not an unusal occurance, even in this day of heightened security, and shouldn't cause you any problems.
