Hi,
I am not an attorney but I have many contacts that can help someone like you. I used to live in Los Angeles, where I dealt with many couples adopting from Brazil. Today I live in Brazil and have better access to lawyers. My question is, where do you want to adopt? I mean, which part of Brazil, Northeast?, Central?, South?
It makes a big difference, since the lawyers usually only work in their regions.
Let me know

Hi,
My husband and I have started the process of Brazilian Adoption, and we need some help recommending us a Brazilian Attorney of Bi-lingual background. Following the your previous thread and response to another forum member, we decided to send you this email.
Your help will be appreciated. My Husband attempted to communicate with you earlier but couldn't get any response so far. Below is the email earlier sent to you. Please your "Help" is needed!
Thanks,
Diane.
Here is our earlier attempt to reach you - sent 1/30/05:
Rubens,
We hope this mail gets to you. I was perusing the Brazil Adoption Forum web page searching for clues on how to deal with the experience my wife had just gone through in Brazil. Fortunately for us I found your name and email contact on the December 2004 Forum discussion on the subject - "Brazilian Adoption Attorneys". On your responds to the inquirer, you indicated that you know some Brazilian Attorneys that can help. My wife and I are in dear need of one and hope you can help put us in the right path.
My name is Tony and my wife's Diane. In fulfillment of our deepest desire, we chose Brazil as the country from which we wish to adopt (due to our love and passion for the people and its culture. We completed our homestudy and had all required documents sent to the Brazilian Consulate in Houston, Texas in November 2004. The Brazilian Consulate approved and provided us the Sealed-package to be delivered in Brazil for required translation. Through a friend we were directed to work with a Brazilian lady (prior had gone through Brazilian Adoption) who lives in U.S but visits and spends time frequently in Brazil. She promised to help us through the process when they found a pregnant mother who is willing to give up the infant for adoption. We were very excited and thought we had someone we can trust.
My wife left for Brazil on 1/21/05 to provide our documents for translations and seize the opportunity to meet the prospective birth mother. Unfortunately, and to our dismay, this lady had a different agenda. She was not forthcoming and did not want my wife to establish any direct close contact with the prospective birth mom and kept information on the pregnant mother from her. The lady only preferred an arrangement where she is the sole mediator. She was demanding a $300 monthly fee to maintain and take care of the infant after birth until all the adoption process is finalized. We were very surprised and disappointed. My wife was very distraught and uncomfortable. Subsequently, she had no choice but to call it off. Actually, my wife is still in Brazil as I write, waiting for her returning flight on Tuesday 2/1/05.
We never anticipated this sought of thing. Going with a Brazilian Attorney would have been the best thing to do, but we did not know of one to use without the language barrier.
Rubens, I did not mean to inundate you with our troubles in this manner, we are truly in need of help to continue the process through an Attorney. Please, could you provide us with a couple of reasonable attorneys we could use without any language barrier. The area that my wife visited in Brazil is Goiana, Goias but we are not limiting ourselves.
Your assistant would be highly appreciated. We would like to talk to you on a few more details if you don't mind.
Thanks,

My suggestion to you is that you work through a reputable agency, rather than through a private attorney.
The Joint Council on International Children's Services, an organization that advocates for ethical international adoption, has a list of member agencies working in Brazil. At this time, there are ten licensed, nonprofit American agencies on the list. You can find the list at www.jcics.org.
A few of the agencies use one large and reputable organization based in Brazil, for assisting with the process. You can also use that organization directly, though some people feel more comfortable with an American agency orchestrating the process.
