Hi, All. I posted this inquiry in another forum...
We just started filling out the initial paperwork thru American Adoptions. I already had a couple questions answered from others such as the length of time for finger prints. SAGEM MORPHO, Inc. is the name on the form... has anyone else used/heard of them? Since this is new to (us) just looking for comfort in consistency of the process.
Though limited, I've heard some good things about American Adoptions... just curious if anyone has input to that.
I've been following an article in the local paper about a couple who decided to adopt Internationally because the domestic process took too long. I hear such different stories... some folks wait while others seem to find success quickly; I suppose there are many factors to determine that. I guess I am just anxious and needing to vent a little. With so many different routes, how does one know they've 'picked' the best place to work with?

We used Sagem Morpho to get our fingerprints updated
during our most recent adoption. We went to the DMV
and they had a desk set up there. It took a few weeks
to get the appointment, but was very easy. I don't know
if they were slow or our agency was not all with it, but
the agency send us a letter 6 months later and said
we needed new fingerprints (that our old ones had
expired) and when I called, found out they hadn't
received the clearance from the Sagem Morpho prints.
Surprisingly, a week later, she called back saying they
had them. Knowing this particular agency, they probably
had them all along and didn't realize it.
We have adopted 2 American babies (now ages 3 and 6
months), both through lawyers (privately) rather than
through an agency. Both are technically considered an open
adoption but differ in the amount of information the birth mother
has about us. Neither has direct contact with the girls.
When we started looking to adopt the first time,
we didn't even consider an agency. We did go to an information
meeting at an agency the 2nd time, but opted not to use them.
In our experience, the cost was higher and there were no
guarantees about it being quicker. (We did use a NJ agency
for the homestudy and post-placement visits - this is required
no matter how you go about finding a birth mother/baby).
Our 1st lawyer found our older daughter's birth mother, and our
daughter was born about 8 months after we signed up with the
lawyer.
For our 2nd daughter, we advertised in newspapers around
the country for 1.5 years before the birth mother found us, and
then our daughter was born less than 2 months later. It's all
about luck/fate - being in the right place at the right time. Also,
the more time (and $$) you are willing to invest, the greater the
chance of finding a baby. Both of our daughters were born
out of state, and the laws differ state by state regarding
relinquishment and rights of an unnamed birth father.
Hope this helps! Good luck!

Virginia - I am SOOO sorry that unfortunate situation came about for you. I have such high hopes that we will get chosen 'soon' as most people I have heard who worked with them (even with a few issues with b-moms) had good results.
We were activated last month. We weren't sure about how the living expenses worked (no fault of A/A, just us being unsure). Because we initially opted for the 'after placement', we were told that we'd be shown to less b-moms since ~80% need it. We did change our profile to offer those expenses prior to placement, as now I have a better understanding of (what, why, how much) these costs can mean to someone.
Yes, we are posted on A/A... If we choose to continue our discussion on this experience, I believe we have to PM. Othewise, if anyone else has insite to the 'living expenses', please share. I have received a lot of really good input from folks and first-hand experience has been enlightening and helpful.
