I know in VA that I can petition the court for my info, they then contact the agency that handled my adoption & that agency initiates a search. Does anyone know what the charges average for the search? The paperwork has a clause that by submitting it I am agreeing to pay the charges, blah, blah, blah... If it's only $100 or so that's not bad, but I can't really afford a $500 fee or anything like that. Has anyone out there gone this route (it seems like the most logical place to start) and what kinds of results did you get? I know that if the bparents are dead, can't be found, or don't want to be found that the court just denies the request & won't tell you why. Has anyone had this happen & how did you handle it? All I know about my adoption is my birthdate & the non-identiying info, which isn't much at all. At least this way I will find out what agency it went through & in what town right?

Try connecting with search/support groups in the area.......
They can help you with questions about the 'official' search system set up in VA. I'm sending you links thru PM.

I knew the agency which handled the adoption of my daughter. It cost me $400.00 but there were no guarantees that the aparents could be located of even if they would respond. Luckily, they were able to locate them quickly and sent a letter to them. The aparents discussed this with my birth daughter. She is not ready at this time to have contact, but they were compassionate enough to send me a copy of her wedding portrait. Hopefully in the future, she will change her mind. IMO it was worth every penny to find out what I did find out - she's a college grad with a good job and happily married.
I don't have any knowledge of what happens from the adoptees end. I would ask specific questions about how much it could cost.
Good Luck in your search,
Barbara
