My husband and I have a fs(2yrs) and fd(1yr)--half siblings. We received both of these children into our care right from the hospital @ birth. We are in the process of adopting these two beautiful children and cannot wait 'til the day comes when we are leagally a "Family".
Here is my problem...J our 1yr fd was born exposed to cocaine. Ever since she was born we have dealt with crying fits. In the beginning we were led to believe it was "colic"... At the 8mth point we were at wits end considering letting her go due to us not being able to handle it anymore and the effect it was having on J-fs. Finally the doctors thought we better look into it and we have started visits with a Dr. @ U of M hospital in Ann Arbor. We have been logging her days for 2 mths and have a return visit on 9/3/04. Also, that Dr. has referred us to the FAS clinic in Ypsilant, MI.
These crying fits can last anywhere from 45 min - 2 1/2 hours. Non stop crying! The Dr. @ U of M agrees it is an attachment problem--more intensified because of her drug exposure. All I ever read about is attachment problems where a child does not communicate or want to "attach"...this beautiful little angel is just the opposite. As long as you are holding her, touching her and giving her your undivided attention...she is fine. Try putting her down when one of these fits are happening and it is awful.
I am so sick of everyone telling me she is "strong willed" or "spoiled". We have done everything to NOT spoil her, thinking this was the problem.
Don't get me wrong she has a lot of good days. It makes me cry to see her as happy as she is on her good days, because i'm worried there is something wrong.
Any suggestions???
Tess:(

My understanding of what attachment disorder is a child who had problems bonding with the birth parents due to neglet etc. They require a lot of attention from adults as a result of not being given the proper amount of attention during the first couple of years.
They constantly look for acceptance, love and nuturing from any adult and tend to always want to kiss, hug an be close to someone.
