Hello...I'm currently using a rented pump to induce lactation. It's way more expensive to rent than I thought it would be (almost $50 a month plus startup costs), so I want to purchase a pump. I'm about to buy the Ameda Purely Yours, but will spring for the more expensive Medela Pump In Style if I think I have to.
Can anyone share their specific success or frustration with either of these pumps? I would so appreciate it.
I'm so glad I found this message board. It's been more helpful than any doctor or LC I have spoken to. Thanks!

I would hold off on purchasing a pump as both the Purely Yours and Pump in style are not great for inducing lactation. Neither one is as powerful as the hopsital grade pumps (rental ones). That is not to say they don't work. They do but I have heard that they don't produce the same results as the hospital grade ones. The other pumps cost about $300 right? that's six months of rental. You should be lactating pretty well if you pump for six months. The down side is that in the end you won't have the pump at home to keep.

I used the Medela Pump In Style..it is actually considered a hospital grade pump....I paid quite a bit for it a few years ago..I think the prices have come down since then..but it was close to $300... I also rented the Whittlestone and never got a drop out with that pump...I also rented the Lactina...did not have much luck with that one either..
I know a double hospital grade electric pump is recommended with inducing lactation..but to tell you the truth..I always got more milk out with the Advent Isis hand pump!! You definately build up your hand muscles too! Of course,,pumping both breasts at the same time helps to build your supply faster...those petal inserts of the ISIS seemed to really help compress the milk sinuses and get the milk out better..for me! Also..if you are already nursing you could pump the other breast with the Isis and that would increase your supply..
Interesting that the hand pump worked better for you. I've wondered about that and whether my hands would get tired before I was "empty". I ended up ordering the Ameda Purely Yours which is supposed to be compatible with the Pump-in-style. It was a little bit of an adjustment from the Medela Symphony, but my milk is still coming and increasing every day. I'm satisfied with it. I found it for around $130 online at Baby Bungalow. I plan to use it to prepare for two or three babies (assuming we are blessed with that many) so it was a great investment.

The Medela Symphony was just coming out on the market when I was already using the PIS...I think it was like $700 to buy! I am glad the Purely is working for you..you may buy a Avent hand pump and try it..my hand/arms never got tired and I found just popping it in my bag so much easier than lugging the PIS around (I worked 12 hour night shifts full time while pumping every 2 hours)..I used the Avent in the airport /plane also each of the 4 trips I made to Guatemala...sounds like you are doing great.!
