Hi! I'm a single, prospective adoptive mother, living in Lakeland. I'm near to the point of calling to enroll in the MAPP classes [within a few weeks], but now I'm totally confused. I'd really love to hear from someone [or two ;) ] that has recently been in, or are currently in, the process.
I haven't really seen anything here for Polk County, and the other counties all seem to have different processes. I guess it comes to three questions [for now!]:
1 - what *is* the current process here in Polk County?
2 - after you've done the homestudy, are you able to use the one they do during MAPP for other states, if need be?
3 - is anyone interested in forming a support group around the Lakeland area, or are you aware of any here?
Any help would be gratefully appreciated! :D

My husband and I took the MAPP classes to adopt through Foster care over the summer. DCF no longer handles the whole MAPP thing, Heartland for children does. They are an agency the state contracts out to do it for them. Before I took the classes, I thought that maybe the classes would be a waste of my time, a bunch of red tape...BUT, I learned so much in those classes!! WE have since had 3 beautiful children placed with us and are very happy! Let me know if I can help! ~Paula
Hi, My husband and I adopted 9 children from foster care in the past 3 years. We also worked thru Heartland for Children in Polk County for the MAPP classes. I have co-taught the MAPP classes and they will really help prepare you to adopt. Also I am the President of the local Foster and Adoptive Support Group that meets monthly. If you would be interested in meeting with us please PM me and I will give you dates and times for our meetings. Jenny
