I have a six yr old girl. At age three was never actually diagnoised but they said she is probably a high functioning Autistic. Because she would not cry as an infant to be changed or fed, and had attatchment problems ever since. She seems very normal in everyday activities, except she can't follow through when told to and has major attention issues, and has some Autistic sypmtoms. Can a high functioning Autistic act like a normal child most of the time? Does this sound like Autisim
I would honestly have her re-evaluated. I have a 4 year old foster child who has been evaluated by 2 diff. psych. as high functioning autism HOWEVER the caseworker, bio mom, nor myself see it. I read a ton of books from the library when he was first diagnosed & still don't see it. Started with a new counselor a couple weeks ago for therapy and she agreed that she didn't see the autism (and the first eval. was from a pscyh. she used to work with & speaks very highly of). In the psych. defense these evaluations were a year ago & he has come a long way since then but the new psych. he is seeing has diagnosed him as ADD & bipolar. We're going to try medication & see how he does and go from there. I guess my point is just being many times when they aren't sure what is wrong they pin a diagnosis on a child that isn't necessarily accurate just to get them a diagnosis (if that makes sense). Good Luck! Denise

HI THERE,
You need to get a re-evaluation. Maybe the child is high functioning, but it could be a number of other things as well. My brother who is 13 now, has Autism. We have struggled through many years and many medications(some helpful , some no) and have made good progress. With these special and beautiful children, patience is 1#!!!!!!!!
