We have a 4 month old adopted daughter whose birthfather had Asperger's. I was wondering if anyone knew the likelyhood of her have it since one parent did? I know you can't know for sure until the child is older but did anybody, looking back, notice anything that would have put up a red flag in their asperger child?

One of my best friends husband has it and only one of her 2 sons. They are functioning very well. Son in college and husband in management. As with any disorder, there's a wide spectrum, but with early intervention things should be fine. Be sure to read "The Out of Sync Child". I have a son with sensory intigrative dysfunction, and it was helpful for me.....it also refers to Aspergers. Those 2 things sometimes go together, as well as ADD or ADHD.
I just wanted to add that one of my best friend's children is an aspie. We always knew there was something different about Katie, our daughters are the same age but at one she was using sentances and two she was reading, she's incredibly intelligent, but lacks common sense. She wasn't diagnosed until a few years ago, age 7 I think, but no one was looking for it. In retrospect, my friend's husband has been diagnosed. My friend has 3 children, one with it, one without and the other seems likely to be without, he is 14 months and seems to be much more average then Katie was.

It is very frustrating that people who are so smart have no common sense.

If you are always putting your shirt on backwards with the tag in the front, is it not logical to always remember to look first to see where the tag is BEFORE you put the shirt on?

My dd does this all of the time. Each time I ask myself silently, "how can she be so darn smart, but not smart enough to look before she puts the thing on?"
No one knows for sure the correlation of Genetics and ASD. I have been told by a clinical psychologist that I probably have Asperger's Syndrome, and my two kids are both diagnosed Autistic. So as you can imagine our house is a three ring circus. Take that for what you will. My wife's parents show a lot of Autistic tendencies too, so, it is very likely that it is genetic in some way. We also think that it is environmental - what kind of area do you live in - are you near any kind of industrial area that would put off toxins? and also food. White bread, with high preservatives, is bad. Coke and other high sugar soft drinks are bad - although we sometimes can't avoid giving them to the kids.

While there may be a genetic predisposition (I still don't know if I by this) what appears to be a "spark" in alot of kids on the spectrum is thimerosal in vaccines..maybe the kids genetically don't produce enough Glutathione to detox the heavy metal and it can't get out and causes damage..who knows..my point is that even if some kids are more genetically prone to ASD's..why not remove all mercury..the spark...that makes alot of these disorders 'come alive'..
