Hi, We are getting ready for our inspections from the health dept and the fire dept. in Howard County to finish our homestudy. Does anyone know what specifically they are looking for? I would hate to have this process delayed by being cited for a minor infraction. Any help or advice would be appreciated!

I didn't feel that my inspection was outrageously detailed. I think they are basically looking to see if your house is safe and sound for any little ones to be raised in.
Basically, the fire inspector looked for working smoke detectors (hired wired with battery back-up are best), at least one fire extinguisher, easy means of egress in case of a fire, no blocked entrances or exits, a fire escape plan, outlet covers, baby gates for any stairs or dangerous areas, childproof locks on cabinets, etc.
It helped that we have a sprinkler system and that I am also licensed to do childcare. For our homestudy inspection, our SW simply walked through the home. She wanted to see where the bedrooms were and I guess get an overall "feel" of the home. I know I went crazy to make sure that everything was perfect and then she simply walked through and then sat down for our "interview". So, relax, I think everything will be fine. You may even want to phone them ahead of time and ask them what major things tend to be a problem in other homes and then you can prepare for that. But, overall, it is simply to ensure that your home is safe for a child.
I hope this helped. Good luck! I'm sure that everything will go well.

We are in AA county.
For our fire inspection the fire department came out to make sure that we had working smoke detectors on both floors. A working fire extinguisher and asked about our escape route.
For our health inspection, the health department came out and checked to make sure we had working toilets, hot and cold running water, check the temp on the hot water heater, checked to make sure our well was properly covered, checked the railings on our porch and deck, checked the railings on the stairs, checked the cords on the blinds, check the fridge temp, checked to make sure all chemicals were out of reach and pretty much just gave tips on keeping the house childproofed. I wouldn't worry about having the door/cabinet latches or outlet plugs, we didn't but I told them and showed them the stuff we had in order to properly childproof our home.
It really isn't that bad. If there is something that they think needs fixed/updated they will let you know and come back to check it once you have taken care of the item. We had a problem with the cap on our well not being tight enough, so we got gigged on that. That evening DH and I went out and looked at it and it just needed pushed down on the pipe. Once we did that it became really tight. We can't pull it off without undoing the screws. We called our inspector and he came out the next day and approved us.
Good luck.
