Hi,
My adopted son Michael came to live with us when he was six years old. Michael started first grade with us. I was working fulltime at the time. I was getting two phone calls a day from his teacher (one at work and one as soon as I got home from work.) This went on the whole school year; Michael was having a lot of behaviors. He was very disruptive in class, couldn't sit still, fighting with others, not able to focus and biting other kids in the class.
We got him into counseling right away because he had a lot of anger and also because of his behaviors at school and at home. Our doctor started Michael on Ritalin when he was seven years old. The first day of second grade. WE did not receive anymore calls from the school at all. The medicine worked wonderful for Michael.
Michael took Ritalin until he was 12 years old and then he needed a med change because of his height and weight. Previous years he had med changes but always was given Ritalin. When he turned 12 the doctor changed his medicine from Ritalin to Concerta.
He was taking Concerta for a little while until he started to crash. I thought he was having a seizure from it. He would act like he did not even hear what I was saying to him and then his eyes were up and then he would start crying. he acted like this when he was coming off of the medicine, once he was off he acted like the crashing never even happened.
So that when me and my husband decided to take Michael off of the medicine all together. While this was going on we heard about a fairly new procedure called Interactive Metronome (IM).
IM is computer aided therapy that trains people that suffer from ADD/ADHD and Autism to utilize their brain more efficiently. The program consist of 15 1 hour visits. The down side is that the benefits of the IM program are only realized after a few weeks after completing the program. Michael has suffered some academically. Regardless, this seems to be better than the crashing that has been happening with Concerta.
Michael just completed his IM and we are waiting to see if there will be any positive results. We are finding that IM is not well known at all. Figured we would post to see if anybody else has heard of it or been through it.
If anybody is interested about IM, you can visit http://www.interactivemetronome.com to find out more about it.
I'll post in a couple of weeks to let you know whether we find IM effective.

I look forward to seeing your next post. I hope that this is helpful for your son. Thank you for your post. God Bless.

Hi,
I have never heard of IM either! I have a 15 y/o as well as 2 and 3 y/o's that have adhd and would be very interested to know how this works out for your family.
The 15 y/o did not do well on Concerta either. They just put him on Ritalin about 2 months ago and I'm seeing a big difference (when he takes it). I'm not sure why they'd take your son off it to begin with (our doc just adjusts his dose according to his height and weight). They told me that Ritalin is the same type of med as Concerta but that they could have him on a higher dose of the Ritalin.
I hope the IM therapy works well for your son and will keep looking to see if you updated.
Thanks for the info.
Michelle
Hi,
Michael's doctor thought concerta would work better for him then the ritilin because he was taking it for a long time.
I think he would of put him back on ritilin if we didnt try the im program.
we are hoping the im is going to do the trick for michael. He is very social and eats like a man now. He also interacts much better with our daughter who is 3.
When he was taking his medicine he was very antisocial and didn't want to be around his sister at all.
It's nice to see the change in him and we are hoping for the best.
Come on two weeks!! lol
Talk to you later
