We have been having trouble when shaving our AA 5 yr old son's hair. We let his hair grow for a few weeks, then it is time to shave it. He says he wants it short.The problem is that when the shaver we have starts to pull his hair in the least, then he starts to scream and it just goes down hill from there. I think perhaps the shaver we have (Wahl) is not ideal for his type of hair. I have searched around online a bit, but to no avail. Any advice would be great.What do you use that works?

first, you might want to take him to the local black barber shop where they can do it. He'd like the experience. And you can watch how they do it and eventually learn to do it yourself.
if you must do it yourself, buy a professional shaver, not one of those from walmart or something. Go to a beauty supply store and ask for their top of the line shavers. you then buy the blades based on the length.
I have very short hair and cut it myself with a professional shaver (which I've had for 8 years now, using it once a week every week-I replace the blades yearly).

Lisa's right - you should probably take the child to a black barber and be prepared to watch several times before attempting it yourself. Kids cuts are usually $10 or less. I'd also recommend that you not let your son's hair grow for "a few weeks" inbetween touch-ups. If he likes his hair cut short (in a close-cropped fade) no more than two weeks should pass. And, if you haven't already, you might want to invest in a good brush (the ones with the square heads and short bristles). DH says the hair should be brushed at least twice a day (from the swirl out) to keep it neat as it grows.
fyi, I have an andis model BG2 shaver. it's heavy and I think I paid a good amount for it, maybe 100 dollars, but before I bought it I was going thru the cheap ones about every few months. It's definitely cost effective.
and the hair brushing: it really feels great to massage the scalp. i have peach fuzz on my head and dh can't for the life of him figure out why I brush, but it really feels great. Invest in a good brush and your son will be happy.
