Cris,
If you fly Continental or American, they both have desks at the Marriott and I'm pretty sure you can book a one way ticket there after you get there. I know most people purchase the lap tickets at the airport... I'm not that sure about the one way, but I did want to let you know about the two airlines with desks at the Marriott. That is pretty convenient, but we usually fly Delta since it's a 3 hour nonstop flight from Atlanta, so I don't know what we'll do. I don't know if there's a Delta desk at any of the other hotels...
I've been doing pre-planning, too... anything to pass the time! I have big hopes for a DNA authorization this week, with a test immediately following.. I hope...
Take care and have a great week!!

judy,
hi!
if i book it after im there, they will make sure i get joining seats right? even if i fly alone on the way there?
i also will probably not take a carseat with me, since going alone, and planning to carry on only. hopefully a seatbelt will work for such a little one. ive always had carseats on other trips, but was never alone...

I do know that lap seats are the same price regardless if you purchase in advance or at the desk. Considering you have to purchase an actual one-way ticket, you may want to call the airlines in advance...or book it when you book your ticket. I am certain the price will increase the closer it gets to departure...you may even find that there is no seat available and have to change your tickets while in guatemala..which costs money...etc.etc..
Try going on to american airlines website (aa.com). Type in a 1-way trip from Guat City to home, estimating your departure. Then re-do it for a 1-way on this coming monday or tuesday of next week and compare the prices. Just a thought.
Also, a little tip with American Airlines. If you want to book your tickets over the phone. First make sure you get an American Airlines Reward #, then when you call don't ask for just international travel, or general reservations...ask for AA Rewards desk, specifically AA Rewards International. All of the above can book the trip, but the last is always the most accomodating..and I have found more discounts and leniancy with ticket changes.
We had to wait until 24 hours before leaving to get our lap ticket. They need to see passport before they will sell you the seat. We had no problems asking for seats all together. They left an empty seat between us even though we purchased a lap ticket because we requested that if possible. We flew Continental.

can we use them for both my ticket (home, gc, home), and our toddlers ticket (gc, home)?
do we need to let the airline know it's a child for the trip home?
also, will a flight attendant be able to help me through customs, connecting flight etc,
or should i just stroller up the baby, grab our stuff and hope for the best?

I don't know about airline mile but we didn't get any help from the airline staff for going through customs, etc. We just had to figure our ourselves. I do know that when you are coming back through customs in the U.S., let them know right away that you are adopting. They put us in a special line.

When we purchased Isaac's one way ticket last spring we went through Federal Travel in Florida. They were by far the cheapest. They also said our tickets were totally changeable but luckily we didn't need to change them. You will need to know the exact way your child's name is spelled on his passport. We did not have show it to them but just had to make sure the name was right.
You can check the stroller at the gate and then they will get it out for you when you arrive. I would definitely plan on a stroller and maybe some sort of carrier depending on the age of your child. He may not like the stroller and by more comfortable in a carrier.
Yes lap tickets are only for children under 2 years old. If a child is over 2 you have to purchase a regular ticket. We found that many of the one way tickets were more expensive than our round trip tickets. One travel agent explained to me that that is because many of the bargain fares are bought up by the consolidators in advance and thus they can sell them for a cheaper fare...but the one way tickets are not purchased by the consolidators since there isn't as much demand for them. When we were checking last April many of the one ways were between 700 and 1200.00. Federal Travel's was around 400.00 I think.

You can not buy a round trip and not use the first half, they will cancel the ticket if you do not show up for the first half., we were going to try it but Delta told us that they would cancel it. You can buy a round trip from Guat to the usa and back to Guat and not use the second half, but I found it was not much cheaper. Delta has lowered their fares last week if you have tried them, www.delta.com
