Hi, My husband and I have recently decided to adopt from Eastern Europe. We prefer as young as possible, so from the research I've done, it looks like Russia might be the only real option in that area. Anyway, we're in the Northern Virginia area. I've found a couple of agencies I'm interested in... but how do we go about choosing which one is right for us? How do I check them out? I didn't have any luck on the BBB website- not sure why, though. Any advice on this topic or related topics would be SO appreciated!
Hi Nene 22. I began this process last spring. I started by looking at the web sites of all accredited agencies listed on the Russian Federation website.
This was, in part, an intuitive process. Some of the agency websites appealed to me immediately; some did not. I then narrowed the agencies down to about a half a dozen and sent off for their information packets.
At that point, I looked at a couple of key things: how soon they typically came through with referrals and what regions they worked in (and are these places I would genuinely like to go). I also paid a LOT of attention to how quickly and how professionally each agency responded to my requests for information - I felt that would give me a good idea of how well the process would go with them later.
There's a thread on the Russia forum listing members of the forum and the agencies they work with. I'm sure most of us would be glad to answer questions if you send a private message (postings on the forum about specific agencies are prohibited).
Very best wishes on your adoption journey!
