I had the privilege of hearing (and taking my kids to hear) Oliver Rajamani, a local musician. Born in India, he has redefined Gypsy Rom music. His show is a moving historical journey of his people as they depart India and travel through the Middle East to eventually settle in Europe, sometimes adding local instrument and experience to their repertoire. He is incredibly talented, playing the sarod, oud, dumbek and Tabla as well as Flamenco guitar to accompany his incredible voice. His music is palpable, spiritual, strong and injects Romany into his Hindi and Tamil lyrics.
I am thrilled to be able to expose my kids to his music, as I have a 20 year interest (love affair really) with the culture and tradition of the Rom, which has driven me to read everything that has been written, which as you all know, is little. If you have Roma or Indian children, you may love to have his music in your home, so that they might experience a piece of their culture regularly.
CDs can be purchased on line. Here's to happy hearts and dancing spirits.
