Americans denied Civil Rights
Dear Editor,
Every year about 130,000 Americans are born and denied their Civil Rights. The Constitution demands that all persons have a right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Yet adult adoptee's have no rights to their Original Birth certificates. Many adoptee's and their children are being denied their right to life because necessary medical information that is relevant to their health and welfare is being denied to them. Most people take for granted the fact that they have access to their genetic and medical information. For those who were adopted, however, it is very difficult to obtain updated medical information unless birth parents have updated their file and many don’t even know how. I am the husband of an adoptee and a father to three children that may never get full access to their medical history. We checked the state medical registry and like most came up empty. When will the Government stop repressing millions of adoptees and their families their basic rights? Where is the outrage from the American people? Why should we pay taxes to a Government that denies us of this basic right? My Local State Representative took no interest in my many phone calls and e-mails to his offices. Why do we have to spend loads of money to retain a lawyer and pay fees to petition the court for a document that all other Americans have a right to? Only to find out there is a good chance we will be denied. My only comfort is knowing that although the Government makes it almost impossible, it is not yet illegal to search for Birthmothers. Our chances are slim, but I will try today. For this may be the only opportunity for me to provide my family with the answers they deserve. My wife was born at the Harrisburg Hospital on 08/18/70 by Dr Herbert Jordon Jr. It was a private Adoption and John J. Krafsig Jr was the lawyer. Birthmothers should be aware that they can contact the state medical registry or file a waver with vital statistics. This will give families like mine a fighting chance. Legislators should revisit these laws and give adult adoptees and their families the same chance at life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness that all other Americans have. This very important information will save lives.
