My 20 month old son is AA, and I would like to do those short spiky dreadlocks in his hair. Does anyone know how to do them? Is putting them in a long process, and is the upkeep difficult? How long can they stay in?
Right now, the babyman's hair is about 3 .5 inches long all over if it was pulled straight, as I have never cut it. Everone keeps urging me to get the short shaved hair cut, but i'm italian, and am used to big hair on everyone, lol....no, but seriously, i like his hair curly and poofy. The thing is, he is getting very crabby about having his hair messed with at all. Thus far, all i have done with his hair is wash it once a week with aa product, and finger comb through it with my hands/rub mositerizing creme product thru it daily. Up until now, that has worked well, but now it is starting to look a little less neat, i guess because his hair is getting longer. A friend with biracial kids suggested a special brush that he uses on his kids (their hair looks good) but when i used it, I didnt like how it looked combed out...more frizzy than the tight corkscrew type curls he normally has. Also, now he is in this phase where he doesnt even like the moisterizing creme being put in. Ugh. Men...even the little ones are so resistant to product, lol.
So, any suggestions? Would the dreads be an option? I think i would have to learn how to do them, and they would need to be pretty easy care...any input from anyone?
Hi,
I think cutting it shorter is probably a better solution than dreads. Dreads are not a popular option in the black community on kids so young (gotta worry about the cultural thing).
you might check out a few hair styles in two books,

It's all good hair
I forget the authors, but they're about black hair, children and diff hairstyles, with photos. Your son will not like his hair fussed with-that's normal. we do nubian knots on dd, also pony tails, but if she were a boy, we'd cut it shorter and have an afro.
