Hi, everyone!
I'm new here to the forum. We rc'd our Foster/Adoption license last May 2004 and then recertified in May 2005. We are interested in foster/adopting a child between ages of birth and three yrs. We have one 12 yr old son w/autism.
We have only had one placement so far for a 5 mo. old child that was very high needs and had colic, she was only with us for 3 days. We have had about 4 calls since then all regarding children over 8 yrs. old.
We had an excellent home study review, taken all the classes required of us ahead of time, I've sent out bios to the dhs workers in our surrounding counties, attended a Meet the Social Worker event in DSM (we're from Boone Co.) and gave them pamphlets on our family, and have called the dhs workers to remind them that we're still available. The only time we hear from our licensing agency is if I call them regarding classes. What more can I do to emphasize to the workers that we're patiently waiting? We haven't had any calls for the last couple of months. Should the licensing agency be keeping in touch w/us & work on our behalf to try to find a placement? I have a feeling this is not happening. Thanks so much for any info./support!
Hi, In our experience workers are interested in locating families for children, not children for families. Waiting patiently is good and advocating for yourself as far and wide as allowable is good also. There are many networks listing waiting children. There are places to post your family profile. If it is allowed in your state, you may also send your homestudy out yourself, or if not maybe create a resume about your family strengths and what you have to offer a child. You might also consider taking another look at your limits regarding age, gender, or special needs. Good luck and I hope things work out for you real soon.

We've done everything we can do and are still waiting. We are strictly adopt. So we have limited ourselves. We had a rough adoption process the first time around. I've sent out numerous homestudies around the state and still have heard nothing..........if we don't contact anyone about children on the kids sake website, we hear nothing.
Thank you for the feedback, it feels good to know that we're not the only ones out there waiting. We tried for 7 years to have a bio child, and it seems like an eternity waiting again! Did your first adoption go smoothly? Did it take a long time to get that first call from dhs? It's just so hard to believe that there is such a big need for foster/adoptive parents and here we are waiting. Perhaps it's the age of the child? I would think there would be as much of a need for small children as for the older ones. Thanks again for responding-would love to hear from you again!
