We are getting close to having the sibling group of 3 placed with us (tenatively planned for next week)!! Our visits (up to 5 day visits now) have been going very well.
The CW called me today about finding out if our doctor will accept 3 new patients on Medicaid, etc. Also to ask our doctor if he will be able to continue the 10 yo ADHD medicine.
As it turns out, the doctor is on vacation this week, but the nurse said that there is documentation and paperwork that they will have to have in order to do any type of prescription for ADHD. He is on Metadate 20 mg.
Here is where it gets somewhat interesting... The CW who previously had this case did not document things (thus she is no longer a CW) so there is no documentation in the case file about his ADHD. All we know for sure is that his grandmother wanted him out of the house (because she couldn't handle him).
From what we understand from there, there were no foster homes available to take him in the county, but there was a therapeutic home in a neighboring county. However, he needed a diagnosis of something to go to TFC. In just a couple days he had a diagnosis and was moved to the therapeutic home....
We live in a very rural area, and I am wondering how I go about finding a GOOD doctor to see him for the ADHD? Also what kind of questions should I be asking about his diagnosis? What kind of tests should have been done, or should they do to confirm diagnosis? I am not convinced that he has ADHD personally, but I just want to be more prepared in order to do what's best for him.
Any advice from those of you more knowledgable would be appreciated.
Thanks,

I would still like input. I feel like my hands are somewhat "tied" on this whole situation unless he ends up TPR and we can adopt.
The family doctor I took him to agreed that we should try a "test" to see if he actually needs the amount of medication that he is taking. The doctor said (and wrote down for his record) to give him the meds for the first month of school, monitor his grades and actions - and then stop the meds for the 2nd month of school and compare (with the teacher, etc.). He wrote all this down and I gave it to the SW but she said absolutely not. In no way could I discontinue his medication because he has a diagnosis of ADHD and according to DHR he must take his meds.
I would like to take him back to the doctor who diagnosed him and have him re-evaluated - however, we have started counselling for the 3 siblings with a very GOOD therapist. The doctor who diagnosed him refuses to see him again unless we stop our weekly therapy with this counsellor and ONLY see "his" therapist once a month for 30 minutes - and only the 1 child will be seen.
BTW, I did get a copy of his "diagnosis" from the original doctor (I had to take a copy to the family physician). On every area of the document it said "unremarkable" or "none" ... except in the notes it said, "diagnosis of ADHD combined type, based on grandmothers reports". Even the letter from his school teacher said he was a good child who did well in class, but was occasionally moody or pouty.
So, like I said, I feel like my hands are really "tied" right now on this matter. Any advice anyone can give would be greatly appreciated.

I'd go over the case workers head. Ignoring doctors instructions isn't up to her. Might not do any good, but I'd try it.

the problem with dx a child with ADHD who has has not had a consitant caregiver or place to live is very hard.
most kids that have been moved from caretaker to caretaker, might seem a little 'odd'.
because of the disruption and their losses in their lives, they might be 'fidigty, or cant concentrate'
now, regarding your child on ADHD meds. i wouldnt change to much about him....but when he gets settled in, it will take a while, then you can think about maybe even getting him off the meds.
my son was ADHD when he came to us...we put him on ADHD meds per his doctor because when he came to us, eh couldnt sit still or function...
well.....guesswho didnt have ADHD?
they do have a test for it...i cant rememb er the name of it...ill find out though....and he did not have it.
just with transiontions alone, our kids have a hard time, now put in abuse or neglect...well, not sure how anyone would act...im sure school work and being calm isnt on the top 10 things that they are thinking about.
anyway just thought id give you my experinece with ADHD.
plus, ADHD is a quick DX. most doctors use that dx for everything in kids....
