We have not hired any kind of agency to handle our adoption yet, and I was wondering if it is possible to find a translator/facilitator without using an agency. Is there a list of some sort? I read that the US Embassy in Ukraine has a list of translators, however, they might not be experienced in adoptions. Has anyone gone this route, or is an agency that helps with independent adoptions a must? Thanks for the info!

Deciding whether to use an agency or to go independent is a major decision when adopting from Ukraine. If you use an agency, it will cost you more money. We decided to use an agency as they have ways of making your whole process go more smoothly. Try looking on FRUA or the Yahoo Ukraine boards, they have more information about the pros and cons of either route than you will find here

I worked with a really good facilitator/interpreter. She (Natasha) has been doing this for about 5 years and knows all the in's and out's of adopting in the Ukraine.
I went with an agency here in the states and they got me in contact with my facilitator. The agency I worked with really didn't help out at all and if I had to do it again I would just work with the faciltator directly. It will save you time and money.
If you are interested in her contact information, let me know.
Best of luck
[font=Arial]My husband and I adopted independently from Ukraine in September 2004. We started the process with our first paperwork on March 11th, traveled September 9th (less than 6 months after starting our paperwork), arrived home with our beautiful , healthy 16 month old son on September 27th (gone a total of only 18 days!).
