Hello again!! I'm wondering if any of you had to obtain sex offender registry checks. If you did, how did you go about getting them? Our homestudy writer thinks it wise to have them but I can't seem to find a request form! Thanks in advance!!

I'm confused, is it a check on your history or to check the registry for registered sex offenders in the area where you live? If it's for you, that should be covered under criminal/finger print checks that are already a requirement. If it's to discover if there are any registered offenders near your home to include this information in the homestudy, that's a new one to me, never heard of this being done. Maybe someone else has

I wasn't sure if the sex offender registry was included in the criminal checks. Thanks for clearing that up! Also, would it be better to go ahead and get a FBI check instead of just the state checks? I keep reading that some states make it necessary to have this check before you can comply with the interstate compact and we want everything in order when its time. Thanks again!!
Good question, I didn't realize you had the option of not getting an FBI clearence in some states, I just thought all states required the FBI as part of the homestudy process. If you actually have a choice and if the FBI clearence is accepted by all states, I'd get it done.
In any case, I would ask the homestudy SW for clarification of her recommendation. If I remember right, for our CA homestudy we had to send our finger prints to the FBI and to a child abuse registry.
If you already have an identified adoption possiblity, be sure to ask if you need representation in that state as well as your own... some states require attorneys for both parties, some states require an agency be used within their state.
It's my understanding that the state and FBI checks would include any criminal offenses...including sexual crimes. In Ohio, if you've lived in your state for more than 5 years you aren't required to have a FBI check. This was in 2004. Not sure if anything's changed.
I wonder if your caseworker was referring to the Central Registry, which falls under DSS? This is a seperate check to see if you have been the subject of a child abuse/negelect investigation. Results from the registery won't show up on a SP or FBI background check unless you are charged with a crime. Are you in the State of Virginia? I can send you that form, as we use this form all the time at work (I work for a State Agency HR Dept and we do crim checks on all employees, and this is one form we use.) If so, PM me and I'll get the form to you or give you the link to download it from DSS. If not, you should check with the DSS of your state, as they should have a similar form.

Hey sugar! She's kinda directed me where to go but I'm a "control freak" so I took the reins on finding all our information. Plus I feel like I'm educating myself a bit on the process. I just hope that our homestudy will meet all state requirements since we don't know where bmom is yet! Anything else you thing I should find and include?
