We are in search of my husbands birth parents. He was born 11-6-63 in Philadelphia. He was adopted out of the Childrens Aid Society. The lawyer that worked for his adoptive parents was John W. Barrett of Bethlehem. We have a certified copy of a decree out of the Orphans Court of Northampton County and on the decree it says that his name was Richard Eric Pownall. We are not sure if that was his birth name. If anyone has any info it would be greatly appreciated. You can email me at dymonlil@ptdprolog.net Thanks so much.

Thank You for responding. We have no idea, all we have to go on is a decree from the orphans court of northampton county showing the name change from Richard Eric Pownall to his adoptive name. We are not even sure if this was his birth name. He was told by his adoptive parents (who are now deceased) that his mother had an affair and got pregnant, and the husband would take her back, but not the baby. I have the memorandum of agreement from the childrens aid society, receipts paid to the childrens aid society, some medical info like birth weight, type of birth etc... I am going to fill out the form for the pa adoption registry. Wish me luck!!!
I was wondering if any one knows if the name on the decree is the real birth name. It say's now, therefore, it s ordered, adjudged, and decreed that the said Richard Eric Pownall shall be the adopted child of ( hid adopted parents names) and shall assume th surnam of the adoptive parents.Does anyone have any experience with this. Is that usually the birth name? Any help would be great.
One idea you may consider. (I and others have used this idea with good results.)
If you are close to Philly then contact or head to the largest library and see if they have old phone books/Polk directories.
I would then try to find out the names and addresses of all Pownall families in the vicinity during 1962-1964 or 1965. This could give you leads on possible names of birth father or mother and their family members.

Have you contacted the Children's Court of that county to have them start the search. That is how I found my bmom. The courts will appoint you a CI to do your searching for you and they can get access to all the records. It is free but it takes a little longer cause you are put on a waiting list. It took about 5 months for the search to start.Jed
