Hi, My name is Stacy and I have been a "lurker" for some time. I am the mother of a beautiful 8 month old boy that we adopted from Guatemala. Being a first time mom, I am having issues with feeding. My son is currently still on formula and on Stage 2 foods. He is becoming very interested in "real" food. When did you start introducing foods? My girlfriend thinks baby food is just horrible and just started feeding her son the foods they were eating but diced up. I am afraid he won't be fullfilled. He only has 2 teeth on the bottom. I have given him mashed potatoes, pizza crust, gerber puffs, waffles ( very small pieces). Any suggestions?

Our ped. suggested that we "try" table food with our babies at 8 months and see if they can tolerate it. In other words, easily swallow it without gagging. Then at our 9 month check-up she asked us to start transitioning them to table foods with a goal of completing the transition by 12 months. At almost 11 mo old, our two still get baby food when they don't eat the table food well. I hope that helps. Oh, and please stay away from: peanut products, egg white, and honey. Easy first foods include: yogurt, banana, canned pears in juice, mild cheese, carrots, gerber puffs, and soon goldfish crackers and vanilla wafers. Mashed potatoes can be harder to swallow because they stick to the roof of your mouth.
