We are in the process of turning in all the paperwork, etc. just to start our adoption process and have ran into yet another snag (will this ever go smooth?). Our insurance, Kaiser Permanente, does not cover foster children. We will obviously be the baby's foster parents until the adoption is final and Kaiser said that our child will not be covered. I asked about buying a policy for this child for the 6 months until the adoption is final, besides it being $200/month, there is a waiting period. If the child is born before the 20th of the month, they will be covered starting the first of the next month, if after the 20th, they will covered the first in two months.
My question/concern is that we have to have insurance. How do we do this with our current policy or even if we buy a policy, how do we get around the waiting period?
Thanks for your time.
If you are doing straight adoption - then thats what you need to tell KP - that its a pre-adoptive placement. Almost every adoption has a 'waiting period' in which the parents have custody of the child before placement.
However, if this is, in fact, a foster placement - your child will be covered by Medicaid up to (and maybe even after) the adoption...Foster Placement = a child who is a ward of the state and placed with you by the state.
Maybe there is just a terminology conflict? I noticed you were specific to infants in your postcan you be more specific about your situation?

Thanks for the pre-adoptive placement statement. I will call KP and explain the situation, again.
As far as our situation goes, we are planning/hoping on adopting a newborn in a domestic situation. Our agency has given us all the paperwork which we are still working on.
Then that's the issue - this isn't a 'foster placement' at all - its a pre-adoptive placement. Hopefully this resolves the issue!
We have Group Health (part of Kaiser), we did an out of state, private adoption. Here is what our Lawyer said.... in our petition papers, it said FROM BIRTH we take TOTAL (financial) responsibility for the baby. Group Health had to cover the baby from the time she took her first breath. (federally mandated) Kathyrn's coverage began immediately (we are fighting with them now because her care (out of state) was not urgent or immergent- she had ABO incompatibilty- not a routine thing for newborns. I have the wordind in our contract if you would be interested in it.....
:thankyou: Dawn
