To tell your child the things that has happened to him in his short little life. The reason I ask is that another area boyfriend hit, kicked, whatever he did sent the little 8 month old child to the E R with a scull fracture. That makes # 2 in a short period of time in my area (cincinnati) and is exactly what happened to my son which ultimately led to him being placed into foster care. I made a gesture (when the news reported this) and my son questioned me why I was mad. I decided to tell him a little bit on how this story related to his being adopted by me. I'm not sure if I made the right decision to spill the beans. He just turned 9 last month.
I cannot stand to hear of these innocent children being injured and scarred for life by supposed people who "love" them. In your instance, it depends I think on how you tell him, not so much in what you say. A little bit is probably alright, it is probably better get some advice from a counselor on how to best broach the subject. I don't know if it is like other things, but I have always heard that you should only tell them what they ask, and nothing more, or in other words it's not best to divulge all the information at one time. My best wishes on dealing with this issue with your son.

I think 9 is somewhat old enough.....I'd leave out the gory details, but old enough to ask specific questions is old enough to getd specific answers IMHO....
