OT- questions on tithing

I was always told 10% of your income. I have heard differing opinions on if that is supposed to be before or after taxes though....I think before taxes is a tad extreme, but am not sure what the church says about this. I was taught that if you don't tithe 10% now, try tithing 5 or 7% then slowly, each month, give a little more, like a % more or so, until you hit 10, then you can "adjust" better financially!
