I didn't want this question to get buried in the other thread about food. What if you aren't a fast food/resturant food type of person? Is there a place that you can buy just basic grocery stuff like bread, milk, etc? If so, how does the price compare?

We stayed at the Marriott and DH went to the grocery a few times. It was right around the corner I guess, I am not too sure since I didn't go, but you could get everything there he said and he bought lots of stuff for our room. It was all very reasonably prices, not expensive at all, cheaper then our grocery in fact. Unless you buy imported food like Hersheys chocolate...which I had to have:rolleyes:

If you stay at the Marriott, go left out of parking lot. A couple of blocks down the street on the opposite side of the road is a grocery store. We always buy our junk food there and any baby supplies that we need. Their baby supplies are cheaper than the Marriott store. They also have paper plates, cups etc if you need them.
Hi There !!! We Were In Gaut For A Few Weeks So We Saw Just About Everything & Went To The Grocery Store A Lot, The Call It The Market. It's Right On The Corner, down The Street From Chili's, Not Far From Any Of The Hotels @ All.Very Reasonably Priced, If You Have Any Qustions & Don't Speak Spanish There Is A Woman In Produce That Understands English Very Well & Is Extremely Helpful :)That's The Only Grocery/market Store That We Encountered.Good Luck ! Our first day there our translator took us as a group to a grocery store for baby supplies. I did pick up a few snack foods. Pop for instance was much cheaper than getting it in the hotel. Doritos on the other hand were over $5 for bag, I think more like $9. So some stuff was cheaper and some wasn't. I brought with a few boxes of granola bars so really didn't need to much. The main thing I would consider when planning on buying food and not wanting to eat out is plates, utensils, cook ware... All the little things can add up. And usually breakfast is included in most hotels.

Rachel, Look for the store labeled "Paiz" or "Hyper Paiz". We stayed at the Crowne Plaza and it was right next to it. I could see the Marriott from the Crowne (2 blocks away maybe?) so it's just down the road to the left of the Marriott I think. The Paiz is like a Super Wal-Mart. We shopped there every day. :)
I was "stuck" in Guatemala for several weeks at the Marriott. There is a Wal Mart type store called Hyper Piaz, but it is kind of expensive. If you to down to the concierge they can get a taxi to take you Piaz Las Americas, over by PGN and wait for you. They charge Q.80 (about $10 US) to go and take you, wait for you, load your groceries for you and take you back to the hotel and unload the stuff for you. IT IS MUCH MUCH cheaper than Hyper Piaz or the store on the corner. I went there a lot and bought milk, cheese, bread, ham, even mayonaise and soda there is about 2.50 US for a six pack, which is the price for an individual soda at the hotel. PLUS, they have Mt. Dew, orange, grape, Pepsi, Coke, Sprite, and Dr. Pepper!!! So much more variety. Just don't forget to get paper towels and plastic knives if you want to make sandwiches!
Enjoy your trip!
God Bless, Nancy
